Plant of the Month for Aug 2025

Minuartia laricifolia

Description and General Information:

Minuartia laricifolia, aka Arenaria laricifolia, is native to mountains of Southern Europe where it grows among rocky ledges and screes mostly above the tree-line.  Plants form a loose mat with thread-like foliage and loose sprays of small 1-1.5 cm white flowers.  Overall, it is somewhat similar to creeping baby's-breath, Gypsophila repens. In the wild, it blooms June to August.

Blooming Season:

May in the south to July in the north.

Cultivation:

This species requires well-drained soil in a sunny site but is not fussy about the soil pH. It is hardy from zones 5-8.

Propagation:

Propagation is easy by seed.  Direct sow the seeds in spring; they do not require stratification. Cuttings are also possible, taken after blooming.
