In the garden, June 28, 2015, in Calgary (Zone 3). This particular plant is six years old, and has formed a gradually widening clump which is about 30 cm high by 20 cm wide this year.
The plant will self-seed somewhat if not deadheaded, which has given opportunities to try this in different settings. It seems to be quite adaptable. Although it grows best in full sun (as the pictured plant is doing), it will grow and flower in quite a bit of shade, and in a variety of soils from heavy clay to a much lighter and sandier loam.
It might be weedy if not deadheaded, but if deadheaded (easy to do as the flowers bloom for three weeks or so and then it's done) it is well-behaved.
