I used to get a small plant from Carroll Gardens in Westminster, MD. Alan called them "gummy snaps." If I ever knew the botanical name, I have forgotten it. They were a few inches high with small white flowers like snapdragons, but the leaves and stems were sticky. They need very good drainage. Does anybody know what these were?

No, Carroll Gardens folded some years ago. With their prime location right in Westminster I imagine that site has now been developed. I don't live in the area any more, so I haven't been there lately. I don't know if somebody else picked up the name and established the nursery elsewhere. Alan Summers was sort of a curmudgeon with a passion for good plant material. He acquired a LOT of it, but the greenhouses and planting beds always looked like there was not enough help to maintain them. I still treasure some of his catalogs.

(forgot to address your second question) I had garden beds edged with the many rocks I had dug up. Even so, I had trouble wintering them over, probably because of wetness. I think they would have fared much better in a trough.
