Friend or Foe ?

Submitted by Longma on

I thought that a thread where we could discuss those critters found on and amongst our special plants may well be useful. It is so easy today to spray and eradicate everything, that sometimes the 'good guys' suffer too from this 'across the board' extermination. Far too often our friends are mistaken for pests! If you're unsure of ID, maybe hold off for  a day, post a pic if you're unsure of the 'pest', then decide if you want it in your garden or not?

Is this a good guy or bad??

Do I clean your plants or eat them?

I believe it is a friend! Maybe it is a Chryopsidae? Fantastic picture anyway Ron!

And you're already on the google image search, too.

The photo is incredible!!!

Thanks guys, but it isn't my photo. No credit here, though I wish I could take pictures like this. It was sent to me by a friend who I thought had taken it. Now I see thats not the case either! A lesson learned!! Thanks Rick.

Well, I DID have to google... where I found out that Chrysopsidae refers to lacewings!

Here are some more absolutely amazing photos of insects, "good" and "bad":
