Little Blue Job

Submitted by Fermi on Mon, 08/25/2014 - 06:40

This originally came from a Seedex (NARGS?will have to check) but it isn't what I thought it would be - it is also seeding itself into other pots!

Does anyone recognise it? Should I be just weeding it out? This year I've decided to "dead-head" it to stop it spreading - I'll have to check out where I used to have the pots in case it's also escaped into the ground,

cheers

Looks like a Collinsia, possibly Collinsia parivflora.

Hi Janet,

thanks, that's it!  I went through my records and found that I got Collinsia parviflora from the NARGS Seedex about 10 years ago!

Does anyone else find it weedy? Or am I just lucky that it likes me? I think it might be okay in a trough but would need thinning out to keep it from taking over,

cheers

Hi, Fermi,

I have this tiny species growing wild in a gravel walkway.  It's listed as an annual so, even if it becomes so prolific that it threatens to take over, you can pull it out before it sets seed.  But I would keep a sample because the tiny bicolored flowers are "cute".

Hi Jane,

yes, I'm loathe to lose it, especially after getting it from the Seedex all those years ago!

I've actually collected seed to send to the SRGC Seedex this year and will look forward to it popping up again next year (all the plants have dried up and gone to seed now as our summer approaches)

cheers
