Larry Thomas's Terrace Garden
In 2009 Lawrence Thomas won the Millstream Garden Award in the Special Garden category. Larry gardened on an east facing balcony on the 11th floor of an upper East Side apartment. He is the founder of the Manhattan Chapter of NARGS. Larry was also a gifted potter. His high-fired pots were put to use on his terrace and were valued gifts to other gardeners. Last October, many of his pots were featured in a News item describing a display put on by the Manhattan Chapter.
Lower Sand Bed
The lower sand bed is planted with acantholimons, a cytisus and dianthus which has been allowed to seed itself.
View of the Driveway Ledges
This view contains Phlox douglasii, Anthyllis vulneraria, dianthus, Anthyllis montana and globularias. Midway up the driveway ledges is Phlox borealis, the earliest of the phlox to bloom. Above you can see the "long steps" to the upper ledges.
Stream Garden
This is an early view of the stream garden. It now has Iris ensatas, Primula japonicas, trollius vars., Caltha palustris fl.pl., and hemerocallis among others. Anne is still busy developing this garden.
Crevice Garden
This is the first, and the lowest, of the crevice gardens that Anne made. The picture was taken in early spring. It's planted with: genistas, onosmas, Daphne x hendersonii varieties, veronicas, acantholimons, penstemons, eriogonums etc.
Anne Spiegel's Garden
Anne Spiegel, Berkshire Chapter, was awarded the Millstream Garden Award in 2011 in the Rock and Alpine Garden category.
You can read a very nice description of the garden by Lori Chips in the March/April 2013 issue of the Oliver Nursery News.
