Succulents in Troughs: And What to Grow With Them
Lori Chips
This talk will delve into why hypertufa troughs and hardy succulents are a match made in horticultural heaven, both in cultivation and aesthetics. Learn why Lori has been known to refer to the blooms on succulents as “A Plague of Flowers.” Ever had a favorite clump of rosettes wane and disappear? These two things are often connected. Explore the things that can be done to promote a thriving colony and make everything look dramatic as you design.
Jay Akerley
Cacti & Succulents in the Canadian Garden: From Sea to Sky
Jay Akerley
Too cold? Too wet? Jay will discuss plant selection and the use or creation of microclimates to incorporate succulents in virtually any rock garden, from Canada's soggy West Coast seaside to the ski slopes. Jay is a Canadian rock gardening enthusiast with gardens in both Greater Vancouver and at Sun Peaks, Canada's second largest alpine skiing resort.
Amanda Bennett
Succulents in the South
Amanda Bennett
Join Amanda as she looks at succulents and other drought tolerant plants for a rock garden in Georgia. Amanda, one of the South’s most knowledgeable horticulturists, joined the Atlanta Botanical Garden in 2002. In 2019, the garden named her as its new Vice President, Horticulture and Collections.
Vince Russo
Great Lakes Cold Hardy Cactus and Succulents
Vince Russo
Some of the key ways Vince learned to grow succulent plants in Michigan have been through trial and error. His main growing area used to be mostly sandy-clay. And he amended the soil with gravel and sand but no organic material. His area receives on average 33 inches (84 cm) of rain per year. He is now experimenting in building small crevice gardens, using results from Colorado growers in the Denver area.
Rod Haenni
Succulents: Old, New, and Upcoming in the Rock Garden
Rod Haenni
Rod will give us a look through the traditional succulents used in rock gardens. Then come the new ones now in vogue. And finally, what we can look forward to in the next few years.
Kiamara Ludwig, Russell Wagner, Walker Young, Brian Kemble
Experimenting with Succulents in Mediterranean Crevice Gardens
Kiamara Ludwig, Russell Wagner, Walker Young, Brian Kemble
For a brief while the four shared a green house in Oakland, California. Kiamara still shares one with Russell, with a focus on growing South African mesembs and bulbs from seed. Brian and Walker, both curators at the Ruth Bancroft Garden, Walnut Creek, now share a greenhouse in Richmond. Both Russell and Brian generate plants by the thousands. Walker and Kiamara build well-draining spaces to test the hardiness of the copious quantities of plants looking for homes.
