When we picture Rikers Island, a garden or greenhouse is probably not the image that comes tomind. Yet here, under the guidance of trained horticultural therapists, people who are incarcerated are taught how to grow delicious vegetables, useful herbs, beautiful flowers and even alpines!
The GreenHouse Program is run by the Horticultural Society of New York in collaboration with the NYC Department of
Corrections, and serves over 400 students, operating six days a week, year round. The first program of its
kind in the country, it is a proven success, helping significantly reduce recidivism.
