As I work my way through Vojtech Holubec's seed list of exotic wonders, how can I resist when I see these amazing photos?

Lori - thank you for that link. I had been searching for Holubec's seedlist but had an out of date site. Really exciting but I've already spent quite a bit with Mojmir Pavelka!!

Yes, I'm just going through Mojmir Pavelka's list too, and having an even harder time restraining myself! He has the most extensive list of
Gentiana
I've ever seen. The list of
Salvia
is incredible too!

He has an
astounding
list of
Primula
! His website (
http://www.pavelkaalpines.cz/
) not yet been undated with the 2011-2012 list and I only have a paper copy at present (given to me by a friend), but I have e-mailed to ask for a pdf of the list and for permission to post it here.
(See seed list and photo gallery link posted here:

I received my seeds last week!
Now I'm busily going through them and, in many cases, guessing at the best way to try to start the seeds.

That seems to be the way with many of these less commonly grown things-- not much information around!

Yes, it's hard to find photos even of some of them. Good thing there are the seed vendor websites... which were, needless to say, the original enticement to buy the seeds anyway!
I'm going on generalities... I assume Brassicaceae and Asteraceae are probably more prone to easy, warm germination than many other families. Is that a reasonable starting point? (If they don't germinate in a few weeks, I'd put them in the cold room for chilling anyway but time will tell.)

I guess all you can go on are generalities when the species are not listed anywhere! I'm going through some species myself- googling, finding some on the Ontario Rock Garden site, and starting to go through the Deno downloads... some are not to be found-- if possible I try to find any species closely related-- though who knows if even that helps?

No need to
go through
each of the Deno downloads for a particular species. Tom Clothier has done it for you! He has combined them all into one Excel index, so you only will have to look in one place to see if a species is listed in any of the three books. You should have Tom's website bookmarked, too.

I had seed from Vojtech Holubec a few weeks ago, for the first time; really exciting list! Like many seed collectors also he is extremely generous giving bonus packets. I have done as described above, sowing some with bottom heat in the greenhouse, on a family basis and from Deno's work (and also the superb advice in the Jelitto catalogue), and others have gone into the fridge (mainly because our winters are really not long and cold enough). I have to admit I resisted the primulas and gentians (!), because they would be difficult to grow in our dry climate - but I may not be able to in the future!

Thanks, Rick-- I did notice when googling a few days ago that there was an index, can't remember if it was Tom Clothier's or not- I didn't worry about it at the time since I didn't have the Deno books downloaded yet, and hadn't gone looking for it yet, since I'm still just skimming the books, but figured I would want that index eventually..

Does anyone here know if Holubec has published a seed list for this year? I can't find it on the web. I still have his list from last year and can order from that if nessesary...but I would love to see a more current list. Thanks!
