There are two options for attaching images to your posts. The standard method is to simply upload them (up to 10 images per post); the images will display under the body of your message. This method is described here:
http://nargs.org/smf/index.php?topic=12.msg21#msg21The second method allows you to position images "inline" with the body of your text, which is useful in illustrated narrative messages. Here's how to attach "inline" images:1. While creating a message, click on
Additional Options in the lower left of the screen, and use the
Browse button to Attach (upload) one or more images (up to 10). In this example, 3 plant images will be attached. The first two images will be placed within the text of this message, and the third image will be allowed to appear below the message in its default position.
Here is an "inline" image of the lovely Allium flavum, it is photo #1:

2. To place an image within your message text, use the special syntax
, and
, and so forth, the number indicating which image is sequentially being referred to. If
is omitted (as I have done in my example), the uploaded image will appear below the message, the default location for attached images.
If you reference a numbered image that does not exist, such as
in this example, it will display as an error message when the message is saved. The error message will say something like: "
tried to inline include (attachthumb) attachment #4 but it could not be found (or you don't have permission to view images)". If this occurs, modify your message and edit or delete the incorrect reference.

Tips:1. Always add the special "
attachthumb=#" syntax on a new line, not at the end of a sentence,
nor in the middle of a paragraph. Always enclose the "
attachthumb=#" syntax with opening and closing brackets, "
[" and "
]".
2. The attachthumb number corresponds to the order in which the photos are uploaded.
3. The attachthumb number does not need to be used sequentially within your text, you
can reference the attachments in any preferred order.
4. If you do not specify attachthumb references for all your image attachments, unreferenced
images will simply appear below the body of your message, as the third image has in my example.
5. You can use blank spaces to "push" or indent the image slightly to the right, if it helps visually.
6. It looks best when text and an attached image are separated by one blank line-feed.
7. Important! Once inline image attachments are used, if you need to edit your message, ALWAYS use the
MODIFY action to make edits. If you use the small
Edit button (paper & pencil symbol in the lower right of a message), and the message is saved, the inline images will not display (its a small bug). But do not panic, you can click on the
MODIFY button on the upper right of your message, then re-save the message, and the images will display properly again.
The third image attachment has not been referenced, so it appears below this message, the default location for attached images.
