Description:Arisaema triphyllum ssp pusillum This small subspecies of the common eastern North American Jack-in-the-pulpit prefers wet soil and blooms later than its larger coisin Arisaema triphyllum subspecies triphyllum. A.T. ssp pusillium is diploid while A.t ssp triphyllum it tetraploid. I almost never see any hybrids in the wild even when both subspecies are growing within a few feet of each other. See the NARGS wiki for more information. The underside of the spathe hood limb is uniformly dark reddish black. Photo taken in the wild in eastern Pennsylvania by Mike Slater
