A foremost authority, he will cover sheet drainage; diet; hygiene; selection of plants; adaptation of plants; planting aspects; natural shading and sheltering; crevice garden rock work techniques; hybrid rock work technique.

Plants from Western Winters without Snow Cover

His seedhouse, Alplains, supplies an incredible assortment of western US alpines, from classics like Aquilegia jonesii and Penstemon grahamii to cacti ssp from the Desert Southwest. His encyclopedic knowledge of the plants includes not only dimensions, but also growing conditions. Get a look at the best of the West for the East!

A Rock Garden without Snow Cover

Rod is a masonry heater builder (stonemason) by trade, including stonewalls, and troughs. Elisabeth is the alpine plant enthusiast and gardener. Together they built gardens for wet, icy, windy situations. This talk will cover some of the trials (pleasures and problems) of the modern rock garden.

Anne and Lori garden in quite different climates though just an hour apart geographically. (Take a look at the March 2008 issue of Martha Stewart Living to see Anne's. Lori is the Alpine Plant Manager at Oliver's Nursery) They will discuss their favorite plants based on location.

Trough Planting

The consumate plantsman, Harvey will demonstrate planting the trough. A master tufa-trough builder, he is an expert at growing alpines. His nursery is legendary!

Creating a New Garden

This master garden designer, author and plantsman ( 2000 AHS award winner of the Liberty Hyde Bailey), conservator (Garden Conservancy founder) will speak on how a garden changes over time. His vast experience includes the rock garden at Cold Springs NY (Stonecrop), and Les Quatre Vents in Canada.

Wall Plants Don’t Need Snow Cover

Formerly co-owner of Twombly Nursery, and prior to that, alpine manager at Oliver's, she is an expert horticulturist for growing rock garden plants. Her planted walls are marvelous to behold. She will illustrate the basics of creating beautiful vertical gardens, as well as alternative sites, with easily grown crevice plants. In addition she will present some not-so-easily grown treasures for special places in your gardens. Join her as she gives tips on which alpines love the wall!

Impacts of Climate on Alpine Plants

Noted author and alpine gardener, his new book Alpine Plants discusses the ecology of alpines. This talk should give us the lowdown on what alpines want to flourish in our garden conditions. And not all alpines get a blanket of snow cover for winter in the wild. A resident of Wales (UK), John is a leading alpine plantsman, author and expert. He is on the Rock Garden Committee of the Royal Horticultural Society.
Geoffrey Charlesworth -Sunday 10am

Glamorous Gardeners, Glittering Gardens

The Opinionated Gardener himself (winner of the prestigious Quill and Trowel Award), as well as co-founder of the Berkshire Chapter, always delights us with his plant knowledge and dry wit. He will depict gardens and their gardeners who he knew from his early years in the American Rock Garden Society. While technology has given modern gardeners many tools, it has not replaced plantsmanship or design.
